The public comment period on the GNSO Improvements Report has been extended by 30 days and will now close on 25 April 2008. In response to a request from three constituencies of the Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO), the Executive Committee of the ICANN Board agreed to grant the month long extension of the original March 25 deadline to permit sufficient time for: (1) the parties requesting the extension to have additional time to prepare and provide their proposal to the ICANN Board (including the details of the consultations and nature of the support that they have gathered); and (2) to allow time for an additional call to the community to file submissions relating to all aspects of the posted report. The extension decision by the Executive Committee was prompted by a request from Philip Sheppard on behalf of the Commercial and Business Users, the Intellectual Property, and the Internet Service and Connection Providers Constituencies. The comment forum was originally opened for the community to respond to a set of recommendations developed by the ICANN Board Governance Committee’s GNSO Review Working Group to improve the effectiveness of the GNSO, including its policy activities, structure, operations and communications (see 3 February 2008 Report of the Board Governance Committee GNSO Review Working Group On GNSO Improvements [PDF, 197K]. The Report reflects the Working Group’s examination of many aspects of the GNSO’s functioning, including the use of working groups and the overall policy development process (PDP), and the structure of the GNSO Council and its constituencies. The Board Governance Committee determined that the GNSO Improvements working group had fulfilled its charter and forwarded the report to the Board for consideration. On 15 February 2008, the ICANN Board acknowledged receipt of the “GNSO Improvements Report” and indicated that it would like to receive final public comments on the Report to enable it to consider and implement the Report’s recommendations as soon as possible. The Board directed ICANN Staff to open a public comment forum on the Report for 30 days, draft a detailed implementation plan in consultation with the GNSO, begin implementation of the non-contentious recommendations, and return to the Board and community for further consideration of the implementation plan. The entire comment forum, as well as background information, is available online at http://www.icann.org/public_comment/#gnso-improvements-report-2008. MARINA DEL REY, Calif.: Time is running out to make the Internet your business and put your name forward to join the global leadership volunteers who help the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers coordinate the polices and process that shape the future of the Internet. “If you want to be a part of ICANN’s exciting work on bringing the languages of the world to domain names, and creating more choice for consumers by allowing for the creation of new Internet extensions beyond the ones currently available like .net or .org, now is the time to let the us know,” said Hagen Hultzsch, Chair of the Nominating Committee (NomCom). “ICANN’s global team of Internet leaders is working on some of the biggest changes to the Internet since it was created – and this is the chance to help make that happen.”
The Nominating Committee is independent of ICANN and is tasked with searching the world for experienced individuals to fill key positions on ICANN’s Board and its Supporting Organizations and Advisory Committees. The following positions are being filled this year:

“The ICANN leadership team is a dedicated group of volunteers from across the world who have helped shape the Internet used by more than a billion people globally. The coordination work done by ICANN has provided a foundation for businesses across the globe—and fostered operations that rely on the Domain Name System’s ability to connect them to customers and business partners,” said Hultzsch. “We’re looking for volunteers to join this team and work alongside people who come from in the technical field, who are leading policy experts, and even individuals who helped create the very foundations of the Internet.”
The deadline to submit Statements of Interest is 15 April 2008 23:59 UTC.
“Beyond its responsibilities for keeping the Internet secure, stable, and interoperable, ICANN’s mission is to grow and evolve its global multi-stakeholder decision-making process, so it is the individuals who make up the wider Internet community who direct and decide the Internet’s future,” Hultzsch added.

Domain Round Table - Boarding Now…
Filed Under Domain News | Leave a Comment
I’m sitting in the Qantas club at the moment reflecting on what the upcoming week in San Francisco will bring. Nothing like winging my way across the Pacific once again
I must admit it that I’m really looking forward to the sessions that I’m moderating on Saturday as they should prove to quite interesting. The panelists are all experts in their field and I think that the challenge will be ensure that we not only hear the best from them but also stick to the time constraints!
The first session includes representatives from companies that have some really innovative new business models for domains. The second, has a number of senior representatives from some of the great parking companies.
I’m really looking forward to catching up with everyone once again and hope to make a lot more new friends. Meanwhile, I think that I just heard my flight being called…..see you soon!
