The meeting reviewed new development projects in the country. The projects which were reviewed include housing and physical planning, power sector, health, energy, transport, communication, environment and social sector development. The ECNEC also reviewed the Diamir Bhasha dam project and the plan to rehabilitate the affectees of Bhashah dam project.

Talking to chairman joint chiefs of staff committee general Tariq Majeed, in Islamabad the Prime Minister said Pakistan, being an important country of the region is playing a critical role for the peace and stability in the region as well as the world at large.He said that despite having many challenges, the government would continue to pursue its policy towards economic sovereignty, smooth political process, good neighborliness, friendly international environment and good governance. The Prime Minister lauded the role of the armed forces for undertaking timely relief activities along with the national disaster management authority to ensure speedy provision of relief goods to the earthquake affectees in Balochistan. The chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff committee briefed the prime minister about the implementation of armed forces development plan.

New Zealand is leading the two match series 1-nil by winning the first test in Chittagong . New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori is confident his team can overcome the loss of all-rounder Jacob Oram in the second test. President Asif Ali Zardari has warned that non-observance of Pakistan’s sovereignty will not prove helpful in fight against terrorism and may prove counter-productive.

Addressing the U.N General Assembly last night, he said unilateral steps by big powers will hurt the feelings of the allied nations. President Asif Ali Zardari made a stirring call for international community’s moral, political and economic support to help fight terrorism, saying the security of the world lay in Pakistan ‘s stability. President Zardari said the challenges facing Pakistan can only be addressed by a democratic government.
Pakistan, he said, was fighting for the peace of the world as also for the hearts and minds of the affected people. The President said he has come before the general assembly in the name of his late wife, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, as a victim of terrorism representing a nation that is a victim of terrorism. He said that a UN investigation into her murder would reassure the people of Pakistan that the international community cares about them, that the UN’s charter of justice is more than rhetoric. President Zardari said Pakistan will work together with Afghanistan, and the NATO forces stationed there, to ensure security of the common border. He also vowed to continue the composite dialogue with India so that their outstanding disputes were resolved. Whether it is the core issue of Jammu and Kashmir , or cooperation on water resources, India and Pakistan must accommodate each other’s concerns and interests.  Source

General Manager Pakistan railways Nasir Zaidi told media persons that the explosion badly damaged one carriage of the train. Another officials of the Pakistan railways said the bomb was planted on the track, which exploded when the train reached there. He said the explosion badly damaged the railway track and resulted in derailment of some coaches of the train. Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani strongly condemned the bomb blast and expressed sympathies and condolences with the families of those who lost life in it. The Prime Minister announced three hundred thousand ruppes each for the families of the dead and one hundred thousand ruppes each for the wounded. The prime minister directed the concerned departments to inquire into the sabotage activity and apprehend the culprits at the earliest. He also directed the district hospital authorities to look after the injured and facilitate their early recovery.   Source

The meeting discussed law and order situation in the province particularly in Karachi city. I.G. Sindh Sultan Salahuddin Babar Khattak briefed the prime minister on the early morning encounter between the police and the suspected terrorists of a banned militant organization in Baldia town. The Prime Minister appreciated the efforts of police for arresting the ring leader and killing of suspected terrorists who were planning for terrorist attack in the city.
