Over 600 people left the blockaded Palestinian territory into Egypt through the crossing — the only one that bypasses Israel. The people allowed to cross include hundreds of Palestinians requiring treatement in Egyptian hospitals as well as Egyptian nationals and Palestinians holding Egyptian passports.

In an interview with CNN, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said the U.S citizens were in the area during the conflict over south Ossetia and were taking direct orders from their leaders. At the United Nations, Russia and Georgia traded harsh words during an open Security Council meeting.The council also refused to approve a request from representatives of two Georgian breakaway regions, which Russia has recognized as independent states, to address the council.Speaking in Washington, white house spokesperson said the U.S may scrap a civil nuclear pact with Moscow and consider sanctions as punishment for its military action in Georgia.She said the U.S is consulting in its international partners, such as France, Germany and all the other NATO countries in this connection. In Tbilisi, the Georgian parliament approved a resolution calling on the government to cut diplomatic ties with Russia. It called on the government of President Mikheil Saakashvili to declare Russian military forces in Georgia illegal and occupying forces.

The chief election commissioner Qazi Muhammad Farooq also accepted the papers filed by Dr. Faryal Talpur, covering candidate of PPP and Roaedad Khan, covering candidate of the PML (N). Nomination papers of the remaining 27 independent candidates were rejected on different technical grounds. The candidates can withdraw their nomination papers by tomorrow noon and the final list of the contesting candidates will be issued the same day. Rice reiterated the U.S. position in separate talks with Israeli foreign minister Tzipi Livni and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. She said anything that undermines confidence between the parties ought to be avoided. Rice also discussed with Abbas for the first time new ideas that could move peace talks forward. Her visit coincided with the release of a report by an Israeli watchdog group saying construction of housing for Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank had nearly doubled since last year.

Talking to newsmen after filing nomination papers of Asif Ali Zardari for the office of the President, the minister expressed confidence to safely sail through the Presidential Election.
“We do not fear if any party forms coalition with the other against PPP,” the minister responded to a question whether the ongoing contacts between the PML-N and the Pakistan Muslim League could create any problems for PPP and coalition partners.
“We enjoy the support of as many voters as required,” she confidently stated.
Sherry described the day of filing the nomination papers for the office of the President as “a day of victory of democratic forces, a victory achieved after years-long struggle.”
Stressing for politics of reconciliation, the information minister said, former Prime Minister Shaheed Benazir Bhutto has also sacrificed her life for the very cause and the PPP would not let her sacrifice squander.
Sherry Rehman said the party is in constant touch with other political parties and added that the PPP would never go against its manifesto and would continue its struggle to strengthen democracy in the country.
“We will steer country out of all crises including inflation, price hike and oil and food problems. PPP would follow Charter of Democracy in its true spirit,” the minister added.
She said that uncertainty was prevailing in the country but the government was determined for people’s deliverance from the challenges of extremism and terrorism.

Pakistan People’s Party and allies filed 14 nomination papers of Asif Zardari as a candidate for presidential election. The parliamentarians from PPP, MQM, ANP, JUI and other coalition partners have proposed and seconded the name of Asif Ali Zardari for the office of the president. Five nomination papers were filed for PML-N candidate justice [ret] Saeeduz Zaman Siddiqui and four for his covering candidate Roedad Khan. Five nominations were filed on behalf of PML-Q candidate Mushahid Hussain Syed. Five independent candidates also filed nomination papers in Islamabad and thirteen in Lahore. In Karachi, nine nomination papers were filed on behalf of Senator Asif Zardari. One form was submitted by, MQM and eight by, PPP and ANP.
In Peshawar, Munir Ahmed Sherazi of Qaumi Ittehad party submitted his nomination paper. No nomination papers were filed in Balochistan. Scrutiny of the papers will be held tomorrow while candidates can withdraw their nomination papers by Saturday and final list of the contesting candidates will be issued on the same day. Polling for the presidential election will be held on the sixth of next month at the joint session of senate and national assembly in Islamabad while provincial assemblies would meet at respective provincial capitals.

However, he said his party’s support for the PPP co-chairman Asif Zardari for the office of President is conditional with restoration of judiciary and abolition of 17th amendment.
Addressing a press conference after meeting with PPP delegation in Lahore he said if seventeenth amendment remains part of the constitution it means that only a non-political and national level leader can be the President of the country with the consensus of all the four provinces. Mian Nawaz Sharif said his party was not taken into confidence while announcing the schedule of President’s election and the decision was taken abruptly.
He said all the powers of Prime Minister as per the constitution of 1973, should remain with the prime minister rather than the President. PML (N) chief said his party wants restoration of judges in the next session of the National Assembly on Monday. He said he wants to remain partner of the coalition government. However all the political partes should respond positively in this regard. Earlier talking to media federal Information Minister Sherry Rehman said she is optimistic that all the parties of coalition will support Senator Asif Zardari’s candidature for the post of President.

Addressing a news conference at Zardari house, party’s deputy Secretary General Mian Raza Rabbani said Asif Ali Zardari has accepted the unanimous decision of the central executive council to become presidential candidate. He said leadership of coalition parties has been informed about the decision. He said there is no ambiguity in the restoration of deposed judges as PPP is committed to all its agreements made with the coalition partners. A special committee has already been constituted to prepare the draft of the resolution regarding reinstatement of judges.
