Ms Livni, head of the largest party, Kadima, said on Thursday Israel would face elections if a government was not formed by Sunday. She has the support of the Labour party but is still short of a majority. Analysts say Shas’s decision is a major setback for Ms Livni. She may still be able to form a government, but it will be considered weak. Ms Livni is committed to continuing peace Negotiatons with the Palestinians, but Shas is opposed to a government willing to discuss the status of Al Quds. Livni, a 51-year-old former Mossad agent, is seeking to become Israel’s second woman prime minister after Golda Meir, who held office from 1969 to 1974.

The meeting discussed law and order situation in the province particularly in Karachi city. I.G. Sindh Sultan Salahuddin Babar Khattak briefed the prime minister on the early morning encounter between the police and the suspected terrorists of a banned militant organization in Baldia town. The Prime Minister appreciated the efforts of police for arresting the ring leader and killing of suspected terrorists who were planning for terrorist attack in the city.

Talking to newsmen after filing nomination papers of Asif Ali Zardari for the office of the President, the minister expressed confidence to safely sail through the Presidential Election.
“We do not fear if any party forms coalition with the other against PPP,” the minister responded to a question whether the ongoing contacts between the PML-N and the Pakistan Muslim League could create any problems for PPP and coalition partners.
“We enjoy the support of as many voters as required,” she confidently stated.
Sherry described the day of filing the nomination papers for the office of the President as “a day of victory of democratic forces, a victory achieved after years-long struggle.”
Stressing for politics of reconciliation, the information minister said, former Prime Minister Shaheed Benazir Bhutto has also sacrificed her life for the very cause and the PPP would not let her sacrifice squander.
Sherry Rehman said the party is in constant touch with other political parties and added that the PPP would never go against its manifesto and would continue its struggle to strengthen democracy in the country.
“We will steer country out of all crises including inflation, price hike and oil and food problems. PPP would follow Charter of Democracy in its true spirit,” the minister added.
She said that uncertainty was prevailing in the country but the government was determined for people’s deliverance from the challenges of extremism and terrorism.

Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has said the coalition government is committed to restore supremacy of the parliament, independence of judiciary and media and 1973 constitution in its true shape.

He was talking to a delegation of Balochistan cabinet led by provincial chief minister Nawab Muhammad Aslam Raisani in Islamabad.
The Prime Minister said we are not against any individual or personality but want to strike a balance between parliament and the office of the president. He said the people have voted for a change in the system. He said that Balochistan’s development is the top priority of the government. The Prime Minister announced a special grant of six billion rupees for the development projects of Balochistan from his discretionary funds. The delegation also met the PPP co-chairman, Senator Asif Ali Zardari.

Federal Minister for Information & Broadcasting and Health Sherry Rehman unveiled the plaque of Benazir Bhutto Hospital in a ceremony held at the Administration Block of the hospital here on Thursday.
Besides others, the Federal Secretary Health Khasnood Akhtar Lashari, Managing Director Pakistan Bait ul Mal, Zumurad Khan, Senator Kh. Akbar, MPA Nargis Faiz Malik, Medical Superintendent of the Hospital Dr. Muhammad Zaman Niazi were also present on the occasion.
Sherry Rehman said it was a great honor for her to attend the ceremony on the auspicious occasion of Pakistan Independence Day.
She said it was the beginning of a new era for democracy in the country following the vision of father of the nation Quaid Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Shaheed Quaid-e- Awam Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and his brave daughter Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto.
She pledged to make the tiny sapling of democracy into a big tree following the great ideas of our leaders.
She said Benazir had dreamt to turn the country into a welfare state by bringing revolutionary changes in the life of the people.
PPP is determined to fulfill the dreams of its Quaid in letter and spirit, despite the challenges ahead with the help of people, she added.

“We are the followers of that Quaid who sacrificed her life for the promotion of democracy, progress and development and bring out the country from crises and chaos,” she added.
Sherry Rehman said that Mohtarma did revolutionary politics throughout her life. To get the country rid of turmoil and crisis, she did the politics of reconciliation and even gave her life for this purpose.
Sherry urged the nation to come forward and extend help in fulfillment of Mohtarma’s mission with patience, tolerance and courage, saying this is the time for taking decisions and to ensure implementation.
The PPP workers raised slogans, “Zinda Hai Zinda BB Zinda Hai.”
Sherry Rehman said since PPP believes in democracy, it never came into power from the backdoor, or using other channels. PPP always come into power in crises, through political and democratic process with public mandate.
She paid rich tributes to all those who sacrificed their lives at Liaquat Bagh with their beloved and brave Quaid.
She said Pakistan came into being after offering tremendous sacrifices and added this is the time for all of us to pledge to work for the country.

He was chairing a high level meeting in Islamabad. The Prime Minister was briefed about the latest flood situation, damages caused and relief activities as well as current level of all reservoirs and rivers. The Prime Minister expressed deep grief over the loss of precious lives and instructed the relief commission to assess correct data of damages on priority basis. He directed that the provincial disaster management cells be taken on board and full coordination be developed in order to make relief activities more effective.
Meanwhile 31 more people were killed and a large number of houses were swept away in rains and floods in various parts of the country.

 

Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has reaffirmed his government’s belief in supremacy of law and constitution and all decision of the matters of national interest will be taken in a democratic way through consultations.

Addressing a news conference on his arrival at Lahore airport the Prime Minister said we came into power through the vote of public and we are working in strengthening true democracy in the country. He said Pakistan People’s party has contributed numerous sacrifices for democracy in the country. He said the government is working for restoration 1973 constitution, independence of judiciary and media and for public welfare. On a question about the President’s office he said the impression that PPP and Nawaz Sharif have different points of view of the matter, is totally wrong.
The governments want to take all decisions through parliament.

 

Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has directed the ministry of food and agriculture to import additional 2.5 million tons of wheat including the 1.5 million tons already approved by the ECC to meet country’s future requirements.

The Prime Minister said this while chairing a meeting held in Islamabad to review the food situation in the country. He said that food shortage is a global phenomenon whose effects are being felt in every country including Pakistan and the government is taking timely measures for meeting these challenges.    Source:
